Order a resources packA Nigerian man, who tested positive while in hotel quarantine in Cairns, has been confirmed as a positive case for the new Omicron variant. The man flew into Queensland on Jetstar flight JQ950 from Sydney to Cairns on Friday 3 December and everybody on that flight has now been deemed a close contact. The man remains in Cairns Hospital but is well.
Another man, from South Africa, who tested positive on Saturday has also been confirmed to have the Omicron variant. He is also in hospital, in Brisbane, and remains well.
Queensland’s amazing Forensic and Scientific Services team identified the sample genome sequence was not Delta, nor the previously described Omicron genome sequence which has been described as having the S gene dropout. This new sequence was later confirmed by the international committee as a sub-lineage of Omicron, Omicron-like, which does not have the S gene dropout mutation.

Today, 10 December 2021, six locally-acquired COVID-19 cases were reported, all on the Gold Coast. Ongoing transmission is expected in the coming days. All six people have been infectious in the community.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath has urged anyone who visited the Gold Coast in the past 8 days to check the latest exposure sites.
